We’re Laura and Paddy Mottram, a couple originally from the UK. We are keen cyclists, usually doing the daily commute by bike and using our holidays to tour around as much as we can, including over 1,000 miles along the North Sea Cycle Route.

It’s not a bad way of seeing the world, and for that reason we decided to head off in May 2011 to cycle around South America. We spent 15 months traveling around the continent on our bikes, visiting every country along the way. We climbed over the Andes, slept out in the Atacama Dessert and sweated our way through the Amazon Rainforest. The trip started and finished on Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

It was the trip of a lifetime, during which we got engaged and married! Now we live in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and have two young children. Neither of them likes sitting still for long either, so we don’t get too far on the bikes nowadays, but can’t wait until they are a bit older and we can explore this amazing area with them. For now we look on enviously at the cyclists heading south from Alaska to Ushuaia, as they pass through our neighborhood.

  • We are in our 60s and going to South America but not cycling unfortunately, more of a soccer pilgrimage. I am a United fan lol
The book is better than any South American guide we have found or read and really gets into life in the continent
What a great adventure i love the book
    Best wishes
