What we now know – before we go

In truth, we can’t remember when we committed to cycling around South America, rather than it being just a ‘crazy idea’, but we’ve been saving and planning for about 18 months.

In that time we’ve undertaken an enormous amount of research. When I look at our equipment it amazes me that almost every item was analysed before we made the purchase.

We leave in just over a month and I’ve been reflecting on the things we’ve learnt about preparing for a trip such as this. Here are my top five lessons. (more…)

Sunny Sunday test riding

Last weekend was test-time. Checking we had all the kit, that we were happy with the bikes and trying out the new tent.

Saturday was spent finding where we’d squirreled away gear we’ve been collecting and ticking things meticulously off against our equipment list. The living room looked like a bomb had gone off, but after some careful organisation we had squeezed everything we need for the next 15 months into eight panniers. (more…)

Join us for farewell drinks – Friday 6 May

We fly off to Rio to start our adventure at lunchtime on Saturday 7 May, so our leaving drinks the night before couldn’t be cutting it finer.

We’d love it if you could join us for a few farewell beers on Friday 6 May. We’ll be upstairs in the Camel and Artichoke, Waterloo from 5pm until 12 when we absolutely must get the final train home if we intend to catch our flight the next day. (more…)

Pedalling about on our new bikes

Bridgwater, Somerset – Reading – London

It’s hard to convey how excited we were on the train down to Bridgwater in spite of an early start. We were off to pick up our new Thorn Nomads from St John’s Cycles, having visited a few weeks earlier to get measured up and spec out what we wanted.

We’d been lucky to get sponsorship for our bikes, so were able to opt for machines beyond our wildest dreams including Rohloff hubs. They looked lovely with matt black frames, shiny hubs, chunky tyres and shiny new Brooks saddles. We couldn’t stop grinning as we test rode around the local park. (more…)
