We recently got a copy of Tom Allen’s new Essential Gear for Adventure Cycle Touring and thought it was such a great guide that we should share it with you.
Laura and Paddy's adventures by bike
The advice we picked up from other cyclists and websites whilst we were planning was invaluable. For that reason we thought we would put together a list of equipment we loved and that we hated, along with a few top tips from our time cycling around South America.
During our cycle ride around South America, we used our stove to cook most of our meals. Initially, we had the MSR Whisperlite but changed to the Primus Omnistove after the former developed an ‘unfixable’ fault.
The Nallo 3GT tent from Hilleberg has a fantastic reputation and for that reason we decided it was worth splashing out on for our trip around South America. We’ve discovered its good points but have been disappointed by its performance in hotter climates.
The Brooks B-17 saddle is difficult to review. We can’t say that we love it, but we both agree that we wouldn’t use anything different, especially now that we have gone to the effort of wearing ours in.
