In 2011, from Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Paddy and I embarked on a 21,000 kilometre adventure around South America by bike. As we cycled over the Andes, across the Atacama Desert and through the Amazon Rainforest, we witnessed a side to the continent that few people ever see.
Our journey took us through Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentine, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana as we made our way, like the giant leatherback turtles we encountered, back to the very beach where our journey began.
Now we’ve written about the experience in our new book: ‘Ipanema Turtles: A South American Adventure by Bike.’
It is an inspirational travel memoir about exploration and self-discovery during an adventure of a lifetime. It tells the stories of the strangers we met, close encounters with sloths and tarantulas, and the incredible places we visited, as well as providing an insight into life as a couple on the road.
Ipanema Turtles is a fantastic read if you want to learn more about the amazing continent that is South America. In the book we explain the stories of the 13 countries through which we rode – the history, culture and politics – as was told to us by the many strangers we met on the road.
If you like the book please leave a review and tell everybody what you thought.
We hope you enjoy reading about our adventure.
