Farewell to the Andes – moving memories

Farewell to the Andes – moving memories

After months of climbing up and down the Andes we have finally left the mammoth mountain range to head east across Venezuela’s plains. As way say farewell, we also look back on special moments and some incredible riding.

It has been an amazing experience from the first time we saw them as we cycled towards Mendoza in Argentina. We were so in awe we stopped to take countless photographs of the snow-topped peaks, only to end up a few days later snowed-in when the road to Santiago was closed. (more…)

10,000km: the stats so far

10,000km: the stats so far

In the blistering heat of the Sechura Desert we celebrated cycling 10,000km since we left Rio de Janeiro in May this year. Wimps into the wild?

Wimps into the wild?

Before we started our trip, wild camping was one of the things we were most looking forward to. But so far we have spent less than ten per cent of our nights in a tent, which leaves us wondering if we are lacking a true adventerous spirit.

The tasks are simple; find somewhere secure, level and hidden; put up the tent; cook some pasta, and soon after it gets dark, climb into our sleeping bags with a book, before falling into a deep sleep. In the morning we wake up to stunning views, pack up the tent and pedal off. (more…)

Up and over the Andes

Up and over the Andes

The idea was to cycle up and over the Andes in the spring. However, we misjudged the seasons and ended up snowed-in for several days waiting for the road to reopen.

Our adventure started in the warm Mendoza sunshine, cycling along Ruta 7 towards the brown foothills of the Andes with snow covered tops peaking above the clouds. (more…)

The kindness of strangers

The kindness of strangers

As we pedal about South America we meet many friendly people. At times though, the kindness of strangers can go beyond the norm.

Last week was one such occasion. Cycling along Ruta 7 we stopped for the night in the small town of Fraga, which serves the busy traffic and the local agricultural industry. We didn’t expect to find a hotel, but hoped we could pitch our tent behind the petrol station. On viewing the busy, concrete yard though, it was obvious this wasn’t possible. (more…)
