We reached 20,000km just south of Salvador on the Brazilian coast. Idyllic sounding, it was actually the rainiest day of our cycle trip around South America so far, and we only stopped for a few minutes to celebrate.
“Are you the people who were on TV last night?” asked our hotel manager in Quito. We were, having spent one of our days off in the capital answering questions from the national media about our trip. After a busy break, we weren’t totally rested when we set off towards the Colombian border, through Ecuador’s never-ending hills.
Having climbed back into the Andes, we were excited about the next stage of our journey towards Ecuador’s capital, which would see us pedalling through ‘volcano alley’. We cycled slowly, admiring the stunning views and stopping off at the many attractions on route.
